Gee Thanks, Street View

Recently Google Maps changed the script that bloggers can use to embed Street View images within their web pages. Unfortunately the new script is not backwards compatible. I learned this today when I went back to one of my previous articles and saw that the Street View images no longer existed. Instead there was nothing but a big blank spot. From what I can determine this script change happened somewhere between December 13-17, 2009.

Apparently this surprised a lot of other bloggers and web designers because a quick check of the search engines demonstrated that this is a widespread problem. I do love Google Maps but this is something that will cause a lot of problems for heavy users of Street View scripts, including myself. It would have been a nice had they not disabled probably tens of millions of embedded images across the web.

It looks like this when its working:

At this point I have about 300 articles I have to go through one-by-one to determine where the problem exists and embed new images as necessary. I am hoping this won’t delay new content too much (I already had one in the works for tomorrow) but if you notice an lag in new articles over the next couple of weeks then that’s the reason. Street View has been a wonderful means for me to illustrate topics on the Twelve Mile Circle so the site may have to go into a bit of a maintenance mode for awhile until I can change all the images to the new script.

Hopefully I’ll be able to retain something akin to a normal production cycle, but if not, thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
