Porto Martins

A Rainy Day in Porto Martins

Porto Martins lies due south of Praia do Vitória along Terceira’s eastern shore (map). It is a scenic fishing village and summer resorts with a popular natural swimming pool at the waterline.

We stopped where land met water. This was the location of the swimming hole set among the stone. It was cold, rainy and too early in the year to go swimming. However, it did offer some excellent views of town and the surrounding area. Rain moved in and just as quickly blew away. A few minutes later the sun came back again.

Porto Martins Waterfront

This photography looks back on Porto Martins and its protected waterfront. Luxurious homes of red tiled roofs and freshly whitewashed walls looked across the ocean.

Agriculture was also common in this area. Green fields rode the gently rolling hillsides of Terceira’s southeastern plains. One the edge of town rose the extinct volcanic spatter cone known as Pico Capitão.
