SPECULATION ON THE IDENTITY OF DAVID COLEMAN:
There is only one David COLEMAN in Ionia Co., MI in the 1850 Census. He is found in the town of Orange, the son of Becket and Harriet COLEMAN. His siblings are Eli, Louisa, Ester, Hiram and Flora (dwelling 107). In the "History of Ionia County, Michigan: her people, industries and institutions, with biographical sketches of representative citizens, and genealogical records of many of the old families" by Rev. E. E. Branch., Branch, Elam E., it states that "Becket COLEMAN came to section 26 in 1845, and occupied wild land that he had purchased of the government." (page 166). The History of Ionia and Montcalm counties, Michigan., Schenck, John S. it states that "as nearly as can be ascertained, there was no church organization until 1849, when, on February 21st, Rev. Elbridge CILLEY, of Boston, formed a Free-Will Baptist Church at the log house of Becket COLEMAN. The organizing members were Becket COLEMAN and wife, T. R. DARLING and wife, Adam LEWIS and wife, William H. ALLEN and wife, and Paul STEEL." (pages 299-300). It also contains a biography on Eli COLEMAN which notes his father, "Becket COLEMAN, was a native of Connecticut, and a farmer by occupation. He was married to Harriet STRATTON, a native of the State of New York, and for a number of years resided in Jefferson County, in the latter State, finally removing to Ohio. In the spring of 1844 they came to Michigan and settled on section 26 in the township of Orange, Ionia Co., where Mrs. COLEMAN died in June, 1858, and Mr. COLEMAN in May, 1874. Eli A. COLEMAN, son of the above couple, was born Sept. 20, 1827, in Jefferson Co., N. Y., being the oldest in a family of nine children. He was quite young when his parents settled in Ohio, and but seventeen years of age when they removed to Michigan. He assisted his father in the care of the homestead until he became of age, when he entered the employ of Hopkins & Co., of Ottawa County, and worked at lumbering for three years. In the spring of 1851 he purchased eighty acres of land in Orange township, which compose a part of his present farm. It was what is familiarly known as 'wild land,' and he set about the task of clearing and improving it. On the 2d of December, 1855, he was married to Miss Hannah J. SMITH, daughter of E. F. SMITH, Sr., and Nancy SMITH." (page 303).
From this information, the Rev. E. G. CILLEY performed the marriage of David COLEMAN and Electa PRIEST, the same minister who led the church that was formed in Becket COLEMAN's log cabin. Witnesses were Eli A. COLEMAN and Hannah J. SMITH, son and daughter-in-law of Becket COLEMAN. Therefore it is postulated that the David COLEMAN who married Electa PRIEST was also the David COLEMAN who was the son of Becket COLEMAN. This being the case, he was born about 1830 in New York.
