(4) Obituary via Newspapers.com: Saint Paul Weekly Minnesotian; Saint Paul, Minnesota; Sat, Mar 27, 1852; Page 2

"Joel WHITNEY, Esq., a much respected and highly useful citizen, who took up his residence with us only a few months since, departed this life on last Monday morning, after a long and painful sickness. Mr. WHITNEY was from the State of Maine, and about sixty-five years of age at his death. The older citizens of St. Paul regarded with confidence and delight his days of useful service in aiding them to build up a new city here, and helping them to instil into the minds of its people all the high-toned and moral attributes essential to real prosperity and happiness. But the Destroyer came ere his career had scarcely begun among his new neighbors. His funeral was attended by the different benevolent orders of which he was a member, and a large concourse of citizens generally."

The newspaper also includes resolutions for "our Beloved Brother, Joel WHITNEY" from the St. Paul Division No. 1, Sons of Temperance, and the Excelsior Club, No. 1, of Temperance Watchmen.

"The father of the subject of this sketch was Joel WHITNEY, an early investor in St. Paul property. The senior WHITNEY was born at Gorham, Maine, May 7, 1787. He was married in June, 1815, at Phillips, Maine, to Sallie DYAR. He was a merchant at Phillips and at Plymouth, and in 1818 removed to Portland. In 1851, he removed to St. Paul, and soon became interested in real estate in large tracts. The addition of Whitney and Smith, in the heart of the present wholesale district, perpetuates his name in the record. He gave to the German Methodist church the lot on Rosabel street, so long occupied by that organization. He was an active temperance worker. He died in this city March 22, 1852, and was buried at Phillips, Maine."
