"Was it Malice? An Old Man Who Was Arrested for Debt, Asks for $5,000 Damages for False Imprisonment. Farmington, Me., Mar. 20. Last October, Jacob H. STINCHFIELD, and aged and highly respected citizen of Strong, was arrested for debt by Deputy Sheriff James F. WORTHERLY and brought to Farmington and delivered over to the custody of Jailor JEWELL. As the new county jail was not then completed, Mr. JEWELL kept the old man in his house, and he was allowed to visit the neighbors and do about as he pleased provided he reported himself at meal times and at night. It was only about ten days that he was thus kept in 'durance vile,' but he swore on the stand, Monday afternoon, that it was long enough to make him 'feel bad and degraded' in the eyes of his neighbors and friends, and he asked the court to award him $5000 damages for what he claimed was a malicious imprisonment. Dr. Joseph B. TWADDLE of Anson, answered as defendant in the case which has a long and interesting history full of legal contests in the courts of two counties. It seems that in 1871 Jacob married for his second wife Dr. TWADDLE's mother-in-law, and that some time after that marriage they went to live with the Doctor at Anson, but trouble arose and when the old man left the Doctor's it was to go without his wife and to begin suit against the Doctor for about a thousand dollars of borrowed money and brought up accounts. This suit was settled, however, at the law office of Stubbs & Fogg at Strong, just before the Franklin Supreme Court set at Farmington, by Dr. TWADDLE paying over the amount claimed, but the Doctor immediately entered suit against Jacob in the Somerset courts for $500, for supplies and medical attendance furnished the old man's wife. Obtaining evidence at Strong which led him to believe that Jacob was converting his large property into ready money and preparing to leave the State, the Doctor had him arrested and promptly committed to jail in default of his giving bonds for appearance at court. Mrs. STINCHFIELD at once began proceedings for a divorce asking for $2000 alimony. Jacob without delay filed a cross libel. The three cases came up for trial last December at Skowhegan before Judge DANFORTH. Judge DANFORTH granted a divorce and $800 alimony to Mrs. STINCHFIELD and dismissed the suit of TWADDLE against STINCHFIELD. Based on the dismissal of the suit upon which he was arrested, STINCHFIELD brings this suit for malicious imprisonment, with Stubbs & Fogg again as his attorneys. Esq. WAREW being a witness in the case, Mr. WHITCOMB of Farmington, appeared for the defendant, who claimed that he was sincere in his belief that STINCHFIELD was about to leave the State when he had him arrested, having heard so from the old man himself and from his friends. The case was not concluded at adjournment."

"STINCHFIELD WINS. In the Suit for Malicious Imprisonment at Farmington... After an exhaustive charge from Judge LIBBEY the jury took the case, and after about four hours of deliberation returned a verdict for STINCHFIELD in the sum of $125. Following this came another suit between the same individuals, in which STINCHFIELD claimed that TWADDLE had converted to his own use a heifer and three sheep which really belonged to the old man himself... Judge LIBBEY awarded Mr. STINCHFIELD $18.40..."
