The National Archives Building, Washington, D.C.

"Dorcas D. WHITNEY signed a Widow's Claim for a War of 1812 pension from Franklin County, Maine on 3 April 1878. She is sixty-six years old and a resident of Freeman, Maine. She is the widow of Ebenezer WHITNEY deceased, who served as a private in the company commanded by Captain Elijah BUTLER in the Third Regiment of Massachusetts Militia commanded by Colonel Ellis SWEET in the War of 1812. Her husband was drafted at Phillips on or about 12 September 1814. She believes the term of his service was to be forty days, and he served a total of fifty-four days. He was honorably discharged or dismissed with the rest of his company at Bath on or about 5 November 1814 (sic)."

"Dorcas describes her husband at the time of his service as twenty-three years old and a farmer by occupation. He was born in Gorham, Cumberland Co., in that part of Massachusetts now known as Maine. He was about 5 feet 6 inches tall with light brown hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion."

"Dorcas was married to Ebenezer WHITNEY at the town of Jay, Franklin Co., Maine on 23 December 1842 by Levi ELDRIDGE, Minister of the Gospel. Her name before her marriage was Dorcas D. PARLIN. She had been previously married to Simon PARLIN, who died at Wilton, Maine on 23 January 1837. Ebenezer WHITNEY had never previously been married. Her husband Ebenezer WHITNEY died at Freeman, Maine on 18 November 1874, and she has not remarried since his death."

"Since the date of his discharge from the army, she and Ebenezer resided in Phillips, now in Franklin County, Maine until May of 1855. At that time they moved to Strong, Franklin Co., Maine, where they resided until March 1858. They then removed to Freeman, where they resided until his death. She then resided in Jay, Franklin Co., Maine from 1841until her marriage to Ebenezer WHITNEY in December of 1842. WHITNEY for forty-eight years and twenty-two years respectively. They identify her as the person who signed her name on the foregoing declaration, she is the person she represents herself to be, and she is the person who was the wife of Ebenezer WHITNEY. They know that she and Ebenezer lived together as husband and wife for many years, and heard him speak at various times of his service in the War of 1812, and had heard of his receiving a land warrant for said services."

"There is testimony from Preston and Cynthia HUFF, both of Wilton, Franklin Co., Maine. They were neighbors of and were well acquainted with Simon and Dorcas D. PARLIN.
