There is a family story that explains her unusual middle name. Her original name may have been Mary Josephine Hull, but that when her father went missing for a period during/after the Civil War, her mother changed her name to Mary Tom Hull in recognition of the father. The father, Thomas Philip HULL, obviously did return and in fact survived until 1911. There is no further evidence to-date that I've been able to uncover to corroborate the story.
