The family records in this bible are written with the unmistakable handwriting of Gertrude (SYLVESTER) SAMPSON. In this document she clearly and unambiguously lists her first name as Arianna. While she generally went by her middle name even on legal documents, credence must be given to a document as important as her personal family bible.

- Author of the source cited above. She wrote these memoirs in June 1916. She "... is, while writing this book seventy-three years and nine months of age and does not realize what it is to feel old" (page 51).

The family started in New Market, NY and went to Albany, NY by railroad, then Albany to Buffalo, NY via the Erie Canal, from Buffalo to Milwaukee, WI by steamboat through lakes Erie, Huron and Michigan, then by horse and wagon in stages to Mineral Point, WI, where a farmer took them to her uncle, Caleb SYLVESTER (page 65).
- Upon arriving in Wisconsin, the family lived in an existing log cabin on the farm they bought, for the first year until father built a proper house; the log cabin then became the kitchen (page 65).
- In Wisconsin circa 1850, "it was very fortunate that she had made good progress in her studies for in Wisconsin then the schools were few, poor and 'far between'. There was not in the state any railroad and Wisconsin had been a territory two years before" (page 65).
- In 1855 she attended school in a log schoolhouse, 3 miles away in Waterloo, Wisconsin, with her brother Eugene and her cousins Fairfield and Emma, walking the distance when the weather was nice (page 54).
- In the summer of 1856 her cousin Abby SYLVESTER was teaching school in Gertrude's father's new barn; she also had her first date with Albert S. SAMPSON; they went to a circus in Mineral Point, WI, eighteen miles away (page 55)

- On September 4, 1861, her fiance enlisted in Co. K, 12th Wisconsin Infantry. The company had been formed by Gertrude's cousin, Captain Daniel SYLVESTER. Albert SAMPSON was made 2nd Sergeant and secretary to Capt. SYLVESTER (page 55).

- Gertrude stayed with her new husband in Boscobel, WI for the next few weeks while he drilled with his unit (page 55).
- They then traveled with Co. K to Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin before heading off to war. Gertrude and Capt. Daniel SYLVESTER's wife ate beans in camp with their husbands on several occasions (page 56).
- While Albert was serving in the war, Gertrude moved to Platteville, WI, where she continued with her formal schooling and also took music lessons (page 56).
- In September 1862, Albert was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on the recommendation of Capt. SYLVESTER. Gertrude traveled with him to Racine, WI where Co. K., 33rd Reg., WI was forming (page 56).
- Albert returned to the war and was promoted to Captain, Co., K. 33rd WI, on June 3, 1863 (page 57).
- On July 14, 1863, Gertrude gave birth to her son Albert, the same day her husband was engaged in the Battle of Jackson, Mississippi. Albert was born at the home of Gertrude's parents, John Barker and Mary Anne (CASS) SYLVESTER, at Cloverdale Farm. (page 66).
- Albert was discharged August 9, 1865 and returned to Gertrude and his family (page 57).
- Lived in Boscobel, WI during the winter of 1865/1866 (page 57).
- Lived on Roseacre Farm 1866-1873 in Mifflin, WI, the property adjoining Gertrude's old home, Cloverdale. The family purchased the farm from Albert's earnings from his service in the army during the war (page 58).

- The family moved to Beloit, KS in September 1878, to get more land for their boys ("cousin Charley BROWN" had preceded them there by several years), but left after "five years of drought, hot winds and failure" (page 58).
- The family then moved to Eldorado Springs, MO in March 1884, their son Rosco having proceeded the family there. Her son Bert had moved to Colorado. Gertrude and her children Gene, Vint, Julie and Perley went first and were joined later by husband Albert. The journey took three weeks (pages 58-59).
- They grew apples and cherries in Eldorado Springs. Gertrude taught school (page 59).
- In November 1887, husband Albert used his homestead rights from his army service to move to Texarkana, AR, arriving just before Christmas 1887. They lived four miles outside of town (page 60).
- Gertrude became a widow on September 27, 1892 in Texarkana, AR, when her husband Albert passed away (page 61).
- In 1897, son Perley passed away. (page 61).
- About 1897 she moved to Monett to live with her son Albert, and she planned to return to Texarkana with son Julian and nephew Eugene who had found work near there. Her plan was derailed, however, when Albert moved to Arizona (page 62).
- Gertrude spend the next six months in Dubuque, IA with her sister Clara [SYLVESTER] HANKS and her mother, and the following winter with her sister Ellie [SYLVESTER] MILLS for six more months. She then returned to Dubuque, IA, visited Minneapolis with her brothers Eugene and Otis for three weeks, and then visited her son Eugene for a month while he was on a survey of the Yellowstone Country (page 62).
