"II. JOHN TILLEY-2, bpt. 26 Aug. 1599, Henlow, Bedfordshire, England [TAG 52:203; MQ 56:1888]. Research has been ongoing to determine if he is the John TILLEY who came to New England. In his articles, 'John Tilley, 1599-1636' [MQ 49:16-17, 56 188-21], Robert L. FRENCH suggests he came in the Anne in 1623 and was a member of John OLDHAM's group, moving to Cape Anne in 1624, Naumkeag in 1626, Dorchester in 1630 and finally to Windsor CT. Although French presents excellent circumstantial evidence, the final collaborating piece of the puzzle is still missing. The following pertains to the John TILLEY of New England who may or may not be John TILLEY-2. John d. Oct. 1636, Saybrook CT [MQ 49:17 (tortured for 3 days by the Indians)]. He m. ( ) Edith ( ), who d. betw. 1649-1650, Milford or New Haven. Edith m.2nd, c1646, Nicholas CAMP. John & Edith may have been the parents of Elizabeth TILLEY, b. c1632, who married 21 Oct. 1653, Springfield MA, Thomas MERRICK who was b. c1620 and d. 1704; they had 8 chil. If it is proven that these two John TILLEYS were the same men, new Mayflower lines will be opened up."

"ORIGIN: Dorchester, Dorchestershire
MIGRATION: 1624
FIRST RESIDENCE: Cape ANN
REMOVES: Dorchester by 1633...
OCCUPATION: Fisherman. Coastal Trader.
BIRTH: By about 1600 (based on first appearance at Cape Ann)
DEATH: Killed by Indians near Saybrook, October 1636 [MHSC 3:3:147-48].
MARRIAGE: By an unknown date ____ ____; she was last seen on 18 March 1637/8...
CHILDREN: None recorded...
COMMENTS: ... 'Mr. TILLY' was active in the coastal trade, carrying letters to John WINTHROP Jr. at Saybrook in 1636 [WP 3:256, 264]. This activity, of course, put him in the path of the events leading up to the Pequot War, and Lion GARDINER tells us that 'Mr. TILLE' 'came from the Bay... without a permit to go up to Hartford' GARDINER warned him many times about the perils of landing at most places along the river, but TILLEY ignored him, went ashore, and was last seen being carried across the river by the Indians, after which he was tortured and killed."
