"ATTORNEY STRICKEN
Alva M. CUMMINS
Last Thursday afternoon at the home of his son, Charles F. CUMMINS of Okemos, Alva M. CUMMINS, 77, died unexpectedly of a heart attack. He had come to Michigan from his home in Florida where he had lived the past two years following his retirement from active practice. He had returned to his son's home following a conference at the law offices of Foster, Cummins, Snyder, Cameron + Foster, a firm in which he was a consultant. He was born near Leslie. He began his practice in Mason in 1891, and in 1897 and 1898 he served as prosecuting attorney. During those two years he was a partner of L. B. McARTHUR, the partnership being known as Cummins + McArthur. Two years later Mr. CUMMINS went to Lansing to begin practice there and soon developed into one of the outstanding attorneys of the state. He served as president of the state bar association, as a member of the public utilities commission and the liquor control commission. Mr. CUMMINS was the Democratic nominee for governor in 1924 and for United States senator in 1934. Mr. CUMMINS' first wife was an OSBORN from Dansville. She died shortly after a daughter was born and after several years as a widower Mr. CUMMINS married Fannie FITCH of the Fitchburg family. Besides the son, Charles, Mr. CUMMINS is survived by two daughters, Mildred CUMMINS, who lived with him in Florida, and Mrs. Howard MALLPASS of Wilmington, Delaware, and six grandchildren. There also remain two sisters, Mrs. Ada KIDD of Belding and Mrs. Bernard LAWRENCE of Los Angeles. Funeral services were held in Lansing Saturday morning with the burial in Maple Grove cemetery in Mason. Members of the Ingham County Bar association attended the service in a body."
