(6) "The story of Denis FITTON" by eddieboom1 on Ancestry.com

"Denis was born in Doneraile, in County Cork, Ireland, on 04/24/1831. The Doneraile area is located on a main road running from North Cork to the city of Limerick (which is about 7.5 miles away). In 1831, Doneraile had 3 castles, several streams and rivers, and 13 historic Danish forts within its boundaries. Its population at the time was 2,652. Denis FITTON married Honorah/Hanorah (also known as Anna) FITZGERALD in Ireland (approximately 1856). The family migrated from the Limerick area to the town of Listowel, in County Kerry, where their first child, James FITTEN (as spelled in the Irish baptismal record) was born. Listowel is situated on the River Feale and is quite a distance from both County Cork (70 miles) and County Limerick (45 miles). It was primarily a market town and is now known today primarily for the famous Irish writers who once lived there. By the late 1850's the family migrated to County Limerick and settled first in the town of Abbeyfeale (where their son Denis was born), which borders County Kerry, and then to Newcastle West, in Limerick County, where most of their children were born. Denis immigrated to the United States as early as 1887, since he is registered in Boyd's Directory of the District of Columbia in that year. At that time he was living at the address 1235 4½ St., SW D.C. He was originally employed as a general laborer, but by 1892 had the fortitude to establish a grocery business. The business was obviously successful enough to allow him to pay for passage of Annie and their two sons Michael and Daniel from Ireland to the States, as they all arrived in America in 1892. Their grocery store was located on 59 E St SW in 1893 and then moved to 300 3rd St SW in 1894, which apparently was a home with a storefront. By 1897, Denis and Hanorah moved to a residence separate from their store, at 234 C St. SW. After several years of running the business, Denis FITTON was stricken with tuberculosis in 1896 and suffered a full year with the illness. He died of complications of the disease on October 11, 1897 and is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on Bladenburg Rd, in NE Washington."

Children: James Dominic; Johanna; Denis Patrick; N. Reuben; Thomas; William; Patrick; Michael D.; Daniel J.; and Catherine.
