"Three sons of William and Nancy HOWARD served in the Union cause during the Civil War;... John served in a regiment of Kansas cavalry, and was killed at Coffeeville, Miss..."
(3) National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailor System Search by Soldier Name (database).
This database contains three "John HOWARD" entries for "Kansas" and "Cavalry." Of those, only the 7th Regiment, Kansas Cavalry served at Coffeeville (December 5, 1862). Whether this is indeed the correct John HOWARD would require further research; the name is rather common. This particular John HOWARD enlisted on 5 Sep 1861, served in Company C, and was killed in action Dec. 5, 1862 at Coffeeville, Miss. Many of the men were recruited from Leavenworth County, Doniphan County and Brown County.
