Notes

Updated October 28, 2024. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.com) from the following source(s):

(1) 1850 United States Census for Maine, Franklin Co., Phillips: August 10, 1850.

Sarah SYLVESTER is the daughter of William and Mary SYLVESTER. She is 15 years old and born in Maine.

(2) 1860 United States Census for Wisconsin, Grant Co., the Town of Blue River, Castle Rock Post Office: Page 134; July 26, 1860.

Sarah SYLVESTER is the daughter of William and Mary SYLVESTER. She is 26 years old and born in Maine.

(3) 1870 United States Census for Wisconsin, Grant Co., Blue River (Muscoda Post Office): page 4; August 12, 1870.

The Sarah SYLVESTER in this record is presumed to be the daughter of William and Mary SYLVESTER. However she is listed as 20 years old. Could this instead be a grand-daughter or some other relation? The place of birth, Maine, suggests that the age might be a typographical error.

(4) 1880 United States Census for Wisconsin, Grant Co., City of Lancaster: Supervisor's District 2; Enumeration District 111; Page 5; June 2, 1880.

Mrs. SYLVESTER is head of household. She is 46 years old, single, and was born in Maine, as were here parents. She is disabled by scrofula in her hands and feet. Alice POLLOCK, age 31, born in New York, resides with her as a servant. They live on Cherry Street.

"On reading and filing the petition of John CARTEW Special Administrator of the Estate of said deceased, representing among other things that Sarah SYLVESTER late of Grant County on the 10th day of June 1888 at New York City in the State of New York died intestate, leaving goods, chattels and estate within this State to be administered..."

Alice BULLOCK deposition supporting a claim on the estate of Sarah SYLVESTER: "I lived at Lancaster, Grant County Wisconsin from December 1875 to December 1887 and I was acquainted with Sarah SYLVESTER now deceased during my entire residence in Lancaster, and have been acquainted with her since I was six years old. Sarah SYLVESTER was a bad cripple, and unable to care for herself, and could not move about he house except as she was moved by some one in her invalid chair, and was in constant use of the care of some person. After the death of Mary SYLVESTER (the mother of said Sarah SYLVESTER) I took care of and done all the work for said Sarah SYLVESTER dec'd, for 12 years after the death of her mother Mary SYLVESTER, at which time the said Sarah SYLVESTER left Wisconsin and went to Florida, and there was no express agreement, what I was to have for my services in caring for her and doing the house work was reasonably worth Three Dollars per week for the entire twelve years, accounting in all to Eighteen Hundred and Thirty Six ($1836) Dollars. And I never received any money from the said Sarah SYLVESTER, all I ever received for said work was my clothing, which would not exceed Fifteen Dollars each year, or One Hundred and Eighty ($180) Dollars in all. During the time -- the entire 12 years I washed for other people, and I earned from Fifty Cents to One Dollar and Fifty Cents each day, all of which money I gave over to Sarah SYLVESTER to keep for me, which would average at least Fifty Cents a day during the entire time or Twenty One Hundred and Ninety Dollars ($2190) all of which money I left with Sarah SYLVESTER for safe keeping for all I did all the house work and caring for said Sarah SYLVESTER, and put in all the rest of time working for others. Sarah SYLVESTER used this money to live upon and put the balance in Stevens Bank at Mont Fort, in Grant Co. When Miss Sarah SYLVESTER left me she did not give me a cent and left me with no money. Sarah SYLVESTER justly owes me at this time Thirty Eight Hundred and Forty Six ($3846)." Signed Alice BULLOCK (X Her Mark). 23 October 1889.
