"Despondent Man Commits Suicide By Inhaling Gas. Harold SYLVESTER, 69, was found dead at 11 A.M. today after inhaling illuminating gas at his home on south Spring rd., south of Roosevelt Blvd. He was discovered seated in a kitchen chair with his head over the gas cooking stove when a housekeeper, who had been hired to care for him, arrived to begin her duties. The housekeeper, Mrs. Catherine WAINWRIGHT, of 5 north Eighth st., entered the house with the assistance of two men who accompanied her in a truck which contained her luggage and other belongings. The men, Joseph HENNESSY, 21 Howard st. and Alfred TALIAFERRO, Centerdon, forced the rear door. Their attempts to revive SYLVESTER failed. Ernest MERIGHI, a neighbor, who attended to SYLVESTER's fire, said he was in the house at 10 A.M. today and that the man appeared to be all right. Mrs. MERIGHI had been preparing meals for SYLVESTER since the death of his wife last January. SYLVESTER was under the care of a physician since his wife had died. It is believed that despondency caused him to take his own life. Police Find Note. Landis Township Police found a note on the telephone book in the house which requested that a sister, Lillian G. WEEKS, of Minneapolis, Minn.; two brothers, Clifford, of Carbondale, Colo., and Eugene D. SYLVESTER, of Winslow, Ariz., be notified. The name and address of Charles M. BAKELY, funeral director, was also contained in the note. Two other envelopes were found containing money and instructions for his burial. Police said the man had an outstanding war record and was receiving an Army pension. Dr. Anthony L. GRICO, coroner, issued a certificate of death by asphyxiation."
