I manage the Howder e-mail list that operates on the rootsweb.com server. This list allows people researching Howder and related surnames to communicate with multiple researchers using a single e-mail message. Since the number of Howders in the general population is actually quite small, the volume of messages from the list is also very low. Subscribers to the Howder list do not have to worry about their e-mail boxes being overwhelmed with messages.
Subscribing and unsubscribing to the list is a relatively painless process. A great explanation can be found on Rootsweb. Rather than come up with my own explanation I will provide text from that site verbatim:
It's easy -- just click on the list you want. When the "mail-to" window pops up, write just the single word "subscribe" in the body of the message. That's all.
If you want to unsubscribe from a list, click on it and write just the single word "unsubscribe" in the body of the message.
