Brewery/Brewpub Location
- Address: 1705 Mariposa St., San Francisco, CA (map)
- Follow this link for a map of all the breweries and brewpubs I have visited.
Reason for Visit: I was in town on business. San Francisco is a great brewery town. Many of this can be visited on foot, and those that cannot are easily accessible by public transportation. Anchor Brewing is a little out of the was so we took a taxi.
Front of Coaster: This coaster is for Anchor Brewing Co.'s flagship beer, Anchor Steam. The full color oval design features a blue anchor entwined with rope as the central image. Hop leaves and cones provide a left vertical frame, and stalks of barley frame the right. The name of the beer adorns a horizontal banner along the top. The slogan, "Made in San Francisco since 1896" forms the bottom boarder. Smaller print at the very top of the coaster provides further descriptive information.
Back of Coaster. "ANCHOR STEAM. Anchor Steam is virtually handmade with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, the thick creamy head, and the rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when 'steam' seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The word 'steam' may have referred to the pressure of natural carbonation developing in the beers. Today the brewing methods of those days are a mystery, and for many decades Anchor alone has used the quaint name 'steam' for its unique beer. Today Anchor is one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world. San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam beer is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam beer is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect."
Front of Coaster: This Anchor Brewing Co. coaster is for their Liberty Ale. It is a full-color oval design. The central design features an anchor superimposed over the image of an eagle with wings stretched, reminiscent of 19th symbols representing the United States. Arrows are replaced by hop cones and stalks of barley. Identifying information for the brewery form the border ring.
Back of Coaster. "Liberty Ale is virtually hand-made in small batches with Anchor's famous commitment to traditional brewing methods. We use an authentic top-fermenting yeast, a blend of the finest malted barleys, whole hops and pure water. While Liberty Ale is ageing [sic.] in our cellars, it is 'dry-hopped' in the classic Ale tradition and slowly completes its fermentation in sealed vats. This process produces a delicate and entirely natural carbonation. Our simple, natural brewing methods will allow Liberty Ale to mellow and improve for many months if the bottles are kept cool and dark. The Anchor Brewing Company is one of America's smallest breweries, and is famous around the world for its exceptional commitment to brewing tradition and for the quality of its fine products."
Front of Coaster: The Anchor Porter coaster also features an anchor, flanked to the left and right by hop cones and stalks of barley. Once again, identifying information for the brewery forms a border.
Glassware: This Anchor Brewing Co. pint glass features their logo acid etched on glass.
Apparel: And this Anchor Porter sweat shirt features the same logo as that found on the coaster for the same beer. |
