Reason for Visit: Serendipity the first time. I was in town on business other times. We first visited Back Bay when we were coming home from Iceland, Our flight had been diverted by chance to Boston's Logan Airport because of a huge snowstorm. This being an international flight, the airline placed us in a hotel overnight at their own expense and flew us home the next morning. We gained an unexpected evening in Boston with nothing to do, and a brewpub just a couple of blocks away. This is the only "good" airline story I have. Nothing this positive has ever happened to me on an airline before or since.
Front of Coaster: The Back Bay Brewing Company logo dominates the front of this coaster. At the center rests a capital letter "B" flanked by two stalks of barley at the forefront, with a a background ribbon noting its 1995 establishment. Yellow arcing ribbons proclaim "The Back Bay" across the top and "Brewing Company" along the bottom. A circular band defines the perimeter in what appears to be a random design, but when compared to the image of the back of the coaster (see below), it is actually a transposition of the drawing! This is a fun and interesting feature.
Back of Coaster: A black-and-white drawing shows colonial brewers in action. A gentleman in a tricorne hat stirs the contents of a large wooden brewing vessle while his associate provides instructions and encouragement. This reflects both the spirit of hand-crafted, small-batch brewing techniques, as well as a portrayal of Boston's historical past.
Front of Coaster: There are several features of this busy coaster. The Back Bay Brewing Company logo appears on the bottom. The logo of Commonwealth Brewery - Boston, appears towards the upper left (were they affiliated or were they simply sharing marketing expenses?). On the upper right is a camel-shaped image of the nighttime sky complete with stars. The image includes a 1998 copyright notice for "RJRTC" (this is likely the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, the makers of camel cigarettes). I have no idea why this appears on the coaster. Was this perhaps some kind of advertising tie-in? In large letters it says, "Where Boston Hops...". Writing along the perimeter displays the address for Back Bay in Boston and Commonwealth in Boston and New York City. A faint image of the Boston skyline appears in the background. This one leaves lots of questions. Can anyone educate me?
Back of Coaster: I suppose in New York this would be the front of the coaster, but I picked it up in Boston so I've arbitrarily decided it's the back. It shares a number of features with the other side of the coaster but focuses on Commonwealth's New York location. In large letters it says, "& New York Rocks". The New York skyline appears faintly in the background.
Glassware: This pint glass features the brewery logo. It is very similar to what was described above, except that four stalks of barley flank the capital "B" rather than two. |
