Reason for Visit: We know people who live in northern Delaware that we occasionally visit. This serves as an ideal starting point for approaching several brewpubs within that area of the state, as well as spending some quality time with friends. The Newark location is found right along Main Street next to the University of Delaware. The area gets lots of foot traffic from students and residents alike, and Iron Hill brings in quite a crowd. The Wilmington location is a much different vibe. It's like comparing city shopping to a big box store. Here the brewery is massive, located next to other jumbo-sized restaurants along the Christina Riverfront, a tributary of the Delaware River. The Philadelphia location is a typical urban environment.
Exterior - Newark location. I took this photo of Iron Hill on a Friday evening. Thankfully they've started taking reservations or we would have had quite a wait. It was fun walking down Main Street and the lively scene that congregated there on a winter weekend. School was in session and everyone was ready to head out and have a good time.
Growler. Naturally we had to take a growler home with us, in this instance filled with Iron Hill's Pig Iron Porter. I took this photo at our table in the Newark location. Notice the mostly finished (soon to be empty) glass of porter just to the left of the growler. We didn't finish the growler until the next evening but the porter held up well over the day and turned out just fine.
Exterior - Wilmington location. The Wilmington location has a huge parking lot out front so no hunting for a spot to leave your car. I took this image from the lot as we walked towards the brewery Notice the giant letters spelling out "Iron Hill" painted along the exterior brickwork.
Brewing Equipment - Wilmington. The brewery itself is located to the right as one enters the Wilmington restaurant. This is a large operation with more than the usual amount of kettles and fermenters for a typical brewpub, in this case in gleaming stainless steel. If you look closely you can see one of the brewers on the other side of the glass door. Not visible but off to the right were two wooden barrels for cask-conditioned ales. They had an Irish Red on cask the day of our visit.
Front of Coaster. This Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant coaster features a simple but elegant one-color circular coaster printed on a beige background. The central image is a stylized crane or heron in flight with a barley stalk shaped into one wing and a hop cone shaped into the other. The brewery name appears on two horizontal lines below this image. All of this is encircled by two narrow border rings. |
