Caldeira Velha

São Miguel, The Azores (Açores), Portugal (March 2001)

Caldeira Velha clings precariously halfway down the volcanic mountain that forms Lagoa do Fogo in São Miguel’s middle interior (map). One of the amazing features of the caldera is a naturally heated swimming pool built beneath a gentle waterfall. The water’s rich mineral content stained the incline in shades of reddish-brown. It was chilly on this cloudy day and at this high altitude. We wore light jackets. Even so, the water was warm and people felt no discomfort soaking in this geothermal hot tub.

Steam

More volcanic wonders can be found in Caldeira Velha. A short path over a wooden boardwalk lead to fissures where steam vented from the depths of the earth. Visitors could walk right up to the crevasse and feel the heat radiate onto their faces.

Microclimate

The geothermal heat and humidity created its own distinct microclimate. It took on a decidedly tropical flair. Lush fern valleys formed around warm water gullies that flowed downhill from Caldeira Velha. Paths allowed visitors to stroll peacefully along while enjoying the landscape.
