(11) The Panola Watchman (newspaper); Carthage, Panola County, Texas; April 1906. Obituary listing:
On March 28, 1906, at 7:30 a.m., as peacefully as a child tired out from play falls into pleasant slumber, Mrs. Sarah Ann HULL, wife of Col. E. S. HULL, passed through death's portal into the eternal beyond. All of her children save one, J. H. L. HULL, were with her and he arrived on the following day in response to a telegram. Her daughter, Mrs. B. M. BAKER, of Canadian, arrived on the afternoon before her death.
Sarah Ann YOUNG was born in Scotland Neck, Halifax Co., N.C., on April 5th, 1826. She was marred to Edwin S. HULL, Nov. 25th, 1841, since which time they have lived peacefully and happily together for 65 years, lacking a few months. Seven children were born unto them, all of whom survive her. The first coffin that ever entered this Heaven-favored home was that which was taken there last Wednesday to receive the mortal remains of this much beloved grandmother in Israel.
Mr. and Mrs. HULL came to Texas in 1859 and settled at Woods in this county, where they made their home until after the war, moving to Carthage in December 1866.
Mrs. HULL joined the Methodist church at Woods in 1862 and remained a devout and exemplary Christian worker to the day of her death. In the earlier days here, when the population was much smaller, the HULL home was the Mecca for preachers and church people. With a large and commodious house, plenty of servants, a table always laden with good things and presided over with good cheer, Col. And Mrs. HULL asked for no greater pleasure than to provide for the comfort of the guests within their doors. At one time while the Annual Conference was in session in Carthage, Bishop MARVIN was their guest for one week and with him twenty-seven other preachers. During this conference forty preachers and their guests were their guests for breakfasts one morning. Mrs. HULL seemed always in a good humor, never appeared to worry and her presence was an antidote to ill humor and trouble. Col. HULL pays this great tribute to her, that during the sixty-five years of their married life she never gave him a cross word.
On November 28th, 1891, Col. And Mrs. HULL celebrated their golden wedding. The reception was largely attended and many handsome and valuable remembrances of the occasion were presented to them.
July 28th, 1887, they held a family reunion at which all the seven children were present and nearly every one of the many grandchildren.
The funeral was from the family residence on Friday morning at 10 o'clock, with services conducted by Rev. A. A. KIDD. The pall bearers were: A. H. BAKER, W. P. LAWRENCE, J. L. CHADWICK, Dr. S. A. WOODWARD, W. T. FRAZER and S. S. BAKER. Interment was in the HULL family lot adjoining the old cemetery.
The passing of Mrs. Sarah Ann HULL, just a few days before her 80th birthday, marks the end of a life that has been devoted to good and noble purposes. Her influence was always for the pure and the right and her Christian example has been as a beacon light not only to those of her family but to many, many others as well. Hers has been a long life well spent and if for every kind deed she has done or helping word she has spoken a pebble were placed upon her grave, she would sleep beneath a monument greater than the hand of man has fashioned.
One of her grandchildren said: 'This is the first broken link in the happy family. She has gone before to tell them that we are coming.'
To the aged and grief-stricken husband, the children and the grandchildren, the Watchman tenders its sincerest condolence.
