Notes
Updated December 8, 2023. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.com) from the following source(s):(1) 1850 United States Census Wisconsin, Fond du Lac Co., the Town of Ashford, District No. 9, Page 113; November 20, 1850.
John Phillip SCHEID (listed by his middle name) is head of household, married to Elizabeth SCHEID (a typo? Everything else seems to match his wife Marie Catharina WEISKOPF). He is 50 years old, a farmer with real estate valued at $700, and was born in Germany. Children in the household are Christopher, Jerrod, Catharin, and Elizabeth.
(2) 1860 United States Census Wisconsin, Fond du Lac Co., Ashford Twp., Ashford Post Office: Page 38; June 21, 1860.
(John) Phillip SCHEID is head of household, married to Maria Catharina (listed as "Catherine") [WEISSKOPF] SCHEID. He is 64 years old, born in Darmstadt, and is a farmer with real estate valued at $1,600 and personal estate valued at $400. The household includes his son Jacob and daughter-in-law Catherine, and grandchildren Jacob, Elizabeth and Peter.
(3) 1870 United States Census for Wisconsin, Fond du Lac Co., Town of Auburn (Armstrong's Corner Post Office): page 37; July 9, 1870.
It is possible, but not proven that John Phillip SCHEID may have been coded incorrectly in the 1870 Census. There is a Phillip SNYDER of the same approximate age and place of birth who lives with Michael SCHNEIDER (listed as SNYDER) and Elizabeth [SCHEID] SCHNEIDER. John Phillip was Elizabeth's father so it's possible the census taker could have tagged the wrong surname to him. This bears further investigation and should be treated only as a clue.
