I have visited Blue & Gray Brewing Co.,
located just outside the City of Fredericksburg, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, USA.

Brewery/Brewpub Location Map

Reason for Visit: We'd seen most of the breweries and brewpubs in the Northern Virginia area and this one had been on our list for awhile. Finally we got a chance to stop by one weekend. While Blue & Gray Brewing Co. has a Fredericksburg street address, technically it's a few feet outside the city in Spotsylvania County (literally feet away from Stafford County, too!). The brewery is located in an industrial park within a large brick structure.

Blue & Gray Brewing Co. Logo Logo: Blue & Gray Brewing Co. draws upon the Civil War history of this area, including pivotal clashes such as the Battles of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville and the Wilderness, both for its name and for its logo. The wounded soldiers depicted represent both sides of the conflict, underscored by the slogan, "The Courage to be The Best." Two strands of barley and a couple of hops cones frame the lower border.
Beverages for sale at Blue & Gray Brewing Co. Growlers and Bottles: A small retail area can be found just inside the entrance. Blue & Gray offers 2-liter growlers and 1-liter bottles, along with shirts, hats and various other apparel. The glassware is returnable and refillable, and there were a number of regulars who stopped by during our visit for an opportunity to stock up for the weekend.
Blue & Gray Brewing Co. Brewing Plant Brewing Plant: The brewery itself is pretty small and fits into a single room. It's quite an unusual room, though: basically a large brick cube with very high ceilings. The structure to the left is a refrigerator where they store kegs, and the nozzles coming out are used to fill growlers. Notice the propane heater in the foreground. That's the basic heat source when boiling isn't taking place. It was chilly this winter day. Thankfully our samples warmed us up.
A Mash Tun at Blue & Gray Brewing Co. Mash Tun: The mash tun wasn't in use so they'd strung a light for us to peer down inside. I'm holding a future brewer in position so he can get a close, personal look. Blue & Gray advertised their tour as family and kid friendly, and that was indeed the case. They even provided juice boxes for the kids while mom and dad sampled the product made on location a few feet away.
A Brite Tank at Blue & Gray Brewing Co. Brite Tank: My idea of a good tour is when our guide pulls samples right off the brite tanks and passes them around. I've only had this happen on a handful of tours. That happened at Blue & Gray so bravo for them! The gentleman who walked us through the brewery was both enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and we enjoyed our stop. We even got to sample an experimental stout aged in bourbon barrels from the nearby A. Smith Bowman Distillery
