Brewery/Brewpub Location Map
- Follow this link for a map of all the breweries and brewpubs I have visited.
Reason for Visit: We were vacationing in Northern Utah, with stops in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, Park City and Bear Lake. This area of Utah has a surprising number of brewpubs given the state's tea-totaling reputation. We stopped at the preponderance of them.
Exterior: Epic is a microbrewery, not a brewpub. The building is purely a functional, industrial design in an area a bit south of downtown away from the crowds and the tourist found closer to Temple Square. Obviously that's part of the design to keep operating costs low. They do have a small on-premise retail shop. People can use the "Public Sales Entrance," walk up to the refrigerated displays and pick up plenty of 22-ounce bombers to go. I think most were bomber sized; I can't recall if I saw other sizes.
Parking: The parking lot had a nice touch with these iron bottle-shaped posts. Epic Brewing pursues an interesting market niche by taking advantage of a quirk in an otherwise strict law. Their slogan is "Strong Ales and Handcrafted Lagers" which seems like a contradiction in Utah. Apparently the state allows a brewery to sell directly to the public -- and get around the 3.2 alcohol percentage restrictions which would normally apply to retailers other than the official Utah liquor stores -- but only if it's done from the grounds of the brewery. Certainly, the Epic Brewery retail shop had beers befitting its name with Epic flavors and strength. What a pleasant surprise!
Bottles: Of course we made sure to stock up on bottles, not knowing when we'd have access to strong ales again. We selected several varieties including those shown in the photo, and took them along on our trip:
