Brewery/Brewpub Location Map

Reason for Visit: I was in town for a conference. I managed to stop by Mission Brewery the day before the conference began, just a couple of hours off the airplane and somewhat jet-lagged.

Mission Brewery in San Diego Exterior: I came across Mission Brewery in May 2011 as they were adjusting to their new location in the Wonder Bread building just across from where the Padres play. This must be a great place to be on home game days, and indeed, the bartender explained that they get quite a crowd of tailgaters. The new brewery wasn't completely functional; they'd gotten just enough of the facility ready for opening day of the baseball season. Construction was still in process and even the brewery sign outside the building was a temporary fabric banner. Nonetheless they were open for business and I was happy to oblige.
Mission Brewery Beers on Tap Mission Brewery Taps: Even the taps were temporary. If I came back in a few weeks, I was told, the permanent taps would be mounted nicely on the front bar. They had both samplers and pints available, with the Shipwrecked double IPA slightly more expensive than the others. They also had a full compliment of merchandise as well as bottles for off-premise consumption. I purchased a bottle of the Shipwrecked and took it back to the hotel to enjoy later that evening.
Mission Brewery Tanks Brewing Equipment: I love microbreweries that incorporate their tasting rooms directly within their breweries. Notice how the chairs and a bar surface have been placed right up to the equipment for great close-up views while sampling the results. They've also done a great job of restoring this building which was once literally a bakery for Wonder Bread. For instance, the large grain silo that once held wheat for bread (the tower visible on the exterior photo with the brewery banner) will be repurposed to hold grains for brewing. Brewing and bread making are quite similar, the main difference being beer has more water and the yeast given time to fully ferment; well, at least in a generic sense. What an appropriate place to relocate!
