Reason for Visit: We spent a long wintertime weekend on the Outer Banks, purposely choosing to go there while the tourist crowds were small.
Exterior: We pulled up to the Outer Banks Brewing Station on a Friday evening in the winter. We had no problem getting a parking space right by the door, which I bet is a considerably different situation than we'd face in this beach-oriented tourist town in the summer. The most striking feature is a power-generating windmill situated on their property. The bill themselves as "America's First Wind Powered Brewery" and the proof is available right outside their doorway. The Outer Banks certainly catches it fair share of wind so this is a reliable commodity. Their website says the payback period on their turbine is about 11 years and its lifetime is 30+ years so the math works in their favor.
Grain Silo: Just about everything in Nags Head orients towards the main road down the spine of the Outer Banks, the Croatan Highway. Still, the area is intensely developed with strip mall after strip mall for a number of miles so sometimes it's difficult to spot a business and respond in time while driving along. The big, red silo placed in a highly visible location certainly helps identify the Outer Banks Brewing Station. It's hard to miss.
Interior: The interior is quite spacious and there's even an upper-floor with a balcony view down to a performance stage (which is directly behind the direction from which I took this photograph). Again, the evening crowd was pretty sparse during our wintertime visit. That's fine. We were there more to sample the beer than be surrounded by a crowd. |
