Brewery/Brewpub Location Map
- Follow this link for a map of all the breweries and brewpubs I have visited.
Reason for Visit: We were vacationing in Northern Utah, with stops in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, Park City and Bear Lake. This area of Utah has a surprising number of brewpubs given the state's tea-totaling reputation. We stopped at the preponderance of them.
Exterior & Tanks: The most surprising thing about the Desert Edge Brewery is that it's located in a shopping mall! Seriously, you walk through the mall past all the usual shops one sees everywhere, then turn the corner while you're on the second floor where you encounter a wall of tanks at the entrance to the brewpub right across from the Old Spaghetti Factory. You have arrived.
Interior: You quickly forget you're in a mall when you enter the actual Desert Edge Brewery. It is a large, open structure with an almost industrial feel with exposed steel beams and brewing equipment scattered about the footprint. There is also outdoor seating available when the weather cooperates.
Sampler: Of course we ordered a sampler; one never knows when one may be able to return again so you almost have to try at least a little bit of everything available. As we found typical in many Utah brewpubs, the available beverages tended to be on the lighter side of the spectrum. I can understand that -- they need to cater to their local clientele and Utah isn't exactly know for adventurous drinkers.
Coaster (front): I managed to grab a coaster for the collection. This one is configured to be turned on its side in a diamond shape. It's composed primarily in shades of green. The name of the brewery, "Desert Edge Pub Brewery" forms an outer border. An off-center rectangle forms the next inner layer, with the names of their for primary beers. Inside, an oval proclaims, "from grain to brain - feed your head." Finally, at the center, appears an anatomical sketch of a human brain.
Coaster (back): Well, I guess it's the back of the coaster, or rather it's just the other side. Again, the brewery name forms an outer border. Large letters proclaim this to be UPA, with curved text superimposed upon it explaining that this stands for Utah Pale Ale. This is an obvious play on the IPA - India Pale Ale dynamic. The upper background then contains an amber-colored beehive, a ubiquitous symbol of Utah. |
