Brewery/Brewpub Location Map
- Follow this link for a map of all the breweries and brewpubs I have visited.
Reason for Visit: We were visiting Bend, Oregon for eight nights and decided to visit every brewery and brewpub in town, eventually accomplishing every stop on the legendary Bend Ale Trail.
Exterior: We made it to Deschutes' public house, their brewpub, to get one of our final Bend Ale Trail stamps. We'd driven past the brewery on SW Simpson Ave. several times already and the timing never seemed to work out. That's fine, we hit the pub instead and called it good. It was right downtown and an easy walk from the big public parking garage. Maybe we'll catch the brewery on our next trip.
Interior - Bar: Visitors first step into the bar area upon entering the Deschutes public. It was quite busy despite what the photo shows (I angled the camera to capture as much of the bar with the fewest people that I could manage). Notice the sigh hanging from the rafters: "No Minors Beyond this Point." Most states have some weird quirk as it applies to alcohol, and in Oregon that includes a prohibition agains minors in designated bar areas. They can go in restaurant areas where people are drinking just as much, just not in the bars. Strange.
Interior - Restaurant: The Deschutes Public House also includes a large dining room (where of course minors are welcome). We chose to sit there because it was a little quieter and because we wanted dinner along with our beer samplings.
Porter Coaster (Front): I've long been a fan of Black Butte Porter so I was thrilled to grab a namesake coaster. It's designed to appear as if it's been printed on an old crate or some other planks of wood, with a full-color version of the Black Butte Porter logo offset and leaning to the left. The sun sets behind Black Butte, just outside of Bend, Oregon, with the Deschutes River in the foreground and pine trees lining its banks.
Organic Coaster (Front): The Green Lakes Organic Ale coaster, on the other hand, is designed to appear as if it were printed on a burlap sack. It includes the slogan, "Amber by Style. Organic by Choice." The beer name rings a horizontal oval covering the bottom three-fourths of the coaste, with the middle hollowed and filled with what appears to be a detail from a topographic map. Either those are topographic contour lines or it's some kind of weird rendering of a mermaid creature or something. I dunno. Your Rorschach interpretation is as good as mine.
Both Coasters (Back): The back of both coasters are identical. It's a rendition of a rustic, hinged door, perhaps like one you'd see in a barn or an old cabin, with rust and plenty of weathering. On it is stamped, "Deschutes Brewery Est. Bend Oregon, 1988" and the notation "Bravely Done."
Apparel - Shirt: I also got a shirt while I was there. This was for Black Butte Porter XXIV, their 24th Birthday Reserve. |
